Running order
The script and running order as produced for the game.
- RecordSurfin the delta Part 6 — The Delta Reverbs
All right, Vietnam—turn it up and give the dust somewhere to go! This is AFVN Saigon, the American Forces Vietnam Network. Army Specialist Denny Cole at the board, with one hot microphone, two cooperative turntables, and an instrumental already trying to escape the sleeve. Charlie Mercer is on the wire from Lai Khê. Charlie, catch it! Caught it! This is KLIK, thirteen-thirty on your dial, broadcasting from Lai Khê, Vietnam. Radio Lai Khê—Happy Radio for the Big Red One! Charlie Mercer here, and Milo Taggart has wandered in carrying half the country on his boots. Milo? Only the good half, Charlie. Milo Taggart with Town and Country. The Delta Reverbs have the first word—and plenty of guitar. Surfin' the Delta, part six. Let it roll!
- DJ
Part six off the rack, and the reverse run is under way. Before the next side, the barracks theft file: short, sharp, and cheaper than replacing your gear.
- Service spot
Hey, man, may I borrow your raincoat? Somebody took mine. They got my poncho too. How come you are always losing things? Do you ever lock them up? Well, sure. Most of the time. I have only lost two hundred thirty-seven dollars and sixty-nine cents worth this year. Make it two hundred thirty-nine. I am keeping this lighter. Get a lock for your locker, and use it.
- DJ
Lock the locker and keep the lighter. Simple mathematics. Here is a bright instrumental from the AFVN stack.
- RecordSaturday On The High Street — The Market Squares
- DJ
That one had more corners than a convoy map. Charlie Mercer at Radio Lai Khê. Division Finance has a word for anybody planning to borrow against his own pay.
- Service spot
Are you returning to the land of the girl watchers soon? Lucky man. But girl watching can become more involved than a spectator sport. When you go out for that expensive stateside night, you do not want to end it doing K.P. for civilians. Be prepared. Think ahead. Now, the serious part. Before departing Vietnam, arrange with the Division Finance Office for the money you may need. Remember: advance pay reduces your monthly pay for six months... or until the entire advance is refunded.
- DJ
Advance pay now, subtraction later. Think ahead, troops. The little lights are lifting off with Fireflies.
- RecordFireflies — Mara Quinn and the Night Jars
- DJ
Fireflies, glowing without a generator requisition. Milo Taggart with Town and Country. Medical section gets this slot with a malaria reminder.
- Service spot
The mosquito is probably the smallest foe you will encounter in Vietnam. He spreads malaria and encephalitis. These diseases can be dangerous if they are not treated early. Do not wait until you get sick to protect yourself. Take your anti-malaria pill weekly. Spray repellent on exposed skin. Sleep under your mosquito net. Spray enclosed areas with an aerosol bomb. Do not become a casualty of a pesky mosquito.
- DJ
Pills, sleeves, repellent, and the net. Four small chores beat one large fever. Back to the Delta Reverbs with Surfin' the Delta, part five.
- RecordSurfin the delta Part 5 — The Delta Reverbs
- DJ
Part five, neat and quick. Denny Cole from the Dawn Buster desk. Now the safety file has something with no rank, no manners, and no interest in your bunk: snakes.
- Service spot
Snakes creep. Usually, they do not bother you... unless you do some creeping yourself. To get bitten, all you have to do is sneak up and try to grab one. The snake is sometimes faster than the hand. If bitten, kill the snake if possible, and bring it to the nearest medic or doctor. It can help determine the serum. Best advice? Do not get bitten in the first place.
- DJ
Give the snake the road. You can argue with him after he leaves. From the private instrumental stack, One String Across the Rice Fields.
- RecordOne String Across The Rice Fields — The Lotus Wire
- DJ
One string, and it still took the whole room. This is KLIK, Happy Radio for the Big Red One. Command information now on approved water and taking care of your feet.
- Service spot
Field reminder. Drink only water from an approved source. When ordered, use purification tablets exactly as directed. Keep canteens and mess gear clean. Change wet socks. Dry your feet whenever the mission allows. Report sores before they become a casualty. Clean water and dry feet are not luxuries in the field.
- DJ
Clean water, dry socks, sound feet. Not glamorous, but neither is sick call. The Electric Canopy switches on Neon Over Saigon.
- RecordNeon Over Saigon — The Electric Canopy
- DJ
Neon Over Saigon, and not a fuse blown. Milo Taggart here. The next cartridge is about letters home, loose talk, and operational security.
- Service spot
Command information. A letter home is not a situation report. Do not write troop movements... operation dates... flight schedules... radio frequencies... unit strength... or defensive positions. The enemy only needs one loose detail to complete a picture. Keep friendly information in friendly hands. Think before you talk. Think before you write.
- DJ
Write the letter. Leave the movement, frequency, and schedule out of it. The Delta Reverbs are back with Surfin' the Delta, part four.
- RecordSurfin the delta Part 4 — The Delta Reverbs
- DJ
Part four came through five by five. Denny Cole on AFVN. Next, a straight warning about military payment certificates, issue gear, and the black market.
- Service spot
Military payment certificates and government equipment are not trading stock. Selling rations, fuel, weapons, ammunition, uniforms, or scrip to unauthorized buyers helps the black market... and can help the enemy. Keep issue gear with your unit. Spend military currency only where authorized. If a deal looks too easy, walk away... and report it through your chain of command.
- DJ
If government property is in the bargain, there is no bargain. Walk away and use the chain of command. Colours Behind the Sun is next.
- RecordColours Behind The Sun
- DJ
Colours Behind the Sun, big and bright. Charlie Mercer at Radio Lai Khê. Career information is on the cartridge with training, assignments, and another term in uniform.
- Service spot
For the man who is going places, a second term in today's Army offers specialized training for the job you want... assignments worldwide... and the chance to move ahead as a specialist or leader. You make choices in education, job, or place of duty. See your brigade career counselor for complete information.
- DJ
Your career, your questions, your counselor. Get the facts before you decide. The Breakwater Runners are moving out on Breakwater Run.
- RecordBreakwater Run — The Breakwater Runners
- DJ
Breakwater Run, moving faster than payday leaving the company area. Town and Country has a notice for qualified enlisted men interested in West Point.
- Service spot
The Army needs qualified enlisted men to fill roles as cadets at West Point. If you are a United States citizen, unmarried, between seventeen and twenty-two years of age, and have completed a college-preparatory secondary school... you may qualify. For entrance examinations and other requirements, contact your local Big Red One reenlistment office.
- DJ
If you meet the requirements, let the reenlistment office tell you no. Do not do the job for them. The Delta Reverbs continue in reverse with part three.
- RecordSurfin the delta Part 3 — The Delta Reverbs
- DJ
Surfin' the Delta, part three. Denny Cole, keeper of the Dawn Buster turntables. Here is a finance reminder about putting your pay to work through the Uniformed Services savings programme.
- Service spot
Let your tour in Vietnam count for something. The Uniformed Services Savings Deposit Program pays ten percent interest on authorized deposits. You may arrange a regular amount from your pay and go home with money in the bank. For eligibility, limits, and deposit instructions, see your unit finance office.
- DJ
Ten percent interest. The studio coffee returns nothing and still receives a regular allotment. Here is an instrumental walk down Beale Street.
- RecordMidnight On Beale — Caleb North and the Even Breaks
- DJ
That Beale Street side had a fine pair of boots. Charlie Mercer, thirteen-thirty KLIK. If R and R is on your horizon, check the shot record before you pack.
- Service spot
R and R can be seven fine, lazy days. But without an up-to-date shot record, your trip can be stopped before it starts. You may not be allowed on the aircraft. Check your record before departure day. Get required inoculations in time. Be prepared for your R and R.
- DJ
Orders, money, luggage, shot record. Miss one and the passenger terminal becomes your vacation. Every Window Shines is on the table.
- RecordEvery Window Shines
- DJ
Every Window Shines. Milo Taggart with Town and Country. This command-information break is about absentee voting and the man whose job is to help you do it.
- Service spot
You are old enough to vote. So what are you going to do about it? Sit on your duff until after the election, and then complain about how everyone else voted? The Armed Forces has made an all-out effort to help you vote: announcements, printed instructions, commander's calls, and voting officers. Do not wait until election day and say nobody told you. Your voting officer is only a few minutes away. See him. Find out how to register and request your ballot. Then use it. Either take part, or stop complaining about the men who do.
- DJ
See the voting officer, request the ballot, and use it. Direct enough. Now the Delta Reverbs with Surfin' the Delta, part two.
- RecordSurfin the delta Part 2 — The Delta Reverbs
- DJ
Part two, and only one surf side remains in the rack. Denny Cole on AFVN. Here is a reminder about education, training, and home-loan planning under the G I Bill.
- Service spot
Your military service can benefit you long after you leave active duty. The G.I. Bill may provide education and training assistance, and eligible veterans may qualify for a guaranteed home loan. Benefits depend on your service and your plans. Check now with your education adviser or Veterans Administration representative.
- DJ
Plan now, and let the benefits office answer the fine print. From the open-road stack, The Road Beyond the Pines.
- RecordThe Road Beyond The Pines — Wade Tolliver and the Pine County Boys
- DJ
The Road Beyond the Pines. Charlie Mercer at Happy Radio for the Big Red One. The next recorded message is a straight word about drug abuse and getting help.
- Service spot
I have seen what drugs can do, and it is a frightening, terrifying experience. Believe me. You may think I am simply another fellow from another generation, reading another set of words. I am not. I know. I have watched lives fall apart because somebody wanted a few quick kicks. I have seen a man lose his health, his work, the trust of his friends, and finally the respect he once had for himself. Do not be taken in by anyone who claims to have every answer, because he has not. The truth does not come out of a pill, a cigarette, or a hypodermic needle. It begins inside your own judgment, with the people who care about you, and with the choice you make before the damage is done. If you want a brighter tomorrow, do not use drugs today. That may sound like a commercial. It is. It is a commercial for your life, and you had better save that life by shaping up. This is a man telling you the truth exactly as he sees it.
- DJ
A real buddy gets help before trouble makes the decision. Back to music with Matchbook Heart, the instrumental take.
- RecordMatchbook Heart instrumental — Nora Vale and the Paper Matches
- DJ
Matchbook Heart without a word spoken. Milo Taggart here. Transportation has the next cartridge: safe driving, sound judgment, and getting back in one piece.
- Service spot
A vehicle does not care whether you are tired, angry, late, or thinking about tomorrow. It goes exactly where you point it. Keep your eyes on the road, keep both hands ready, and leave the radio controls alone until you stop. In rain, dust, convoy traffic, or blackout conditions, slow down before the road makes the decision for you. Drive as if the other fellow has not seen you. He may not have.
- DJ
Slow down, stay sharp, and leave the heroics to the guitar player. Another road instrumental is rolling out of the AFVN stack.
- RecordLast Bus To Memphis
- DJ
That bus made good time. Denny Cole from the Dawn Buster. For men eligible for in-country R and R, the China Beach information cartridge is ready.
- Service spot
The sun, the surf, and a change of pace. If your unit and duty schedule permit, ask about three-day in-country rest and recreation at China Beach. Eligibility, transportation, and available dates are handled through your unit. Do not make private arrangements and do not assume a date until the orders are approved. A short break can do a man good. Make sure the paperwork gets there before he does.
- DJ
Check eligibility and arrangements through the proper office before making plans. Now an instrumental from the far end of the map.
- RecordThe Night Has No Map
- DJ
That map did not give up its secrets. Charlie Mercer at KLIK. One more company-area notice, this one for the Big Red One club wristwatch.
- Service spot
Happy Radio, thirteen-thirty. The Third Brigade E.M. and N.C.O. Clubs now have a special Big Red One wristwatch for members of the Iron Brigade. It has seventeen jewels. It is waterproof and antimagnetic, and carries the Big Red One insignia on the face. The price is seventeen dollars and fifty cents. This club purchase does not require a ration-card authorization. If you need a watch... there you go.
- DJ
There is the information. Ask the club office before you spend the money twice. When Johnny Came Home is next on AFVN.
- RecordWhen Johnny Came Home
- DJ
When Johnny Came Home. Milo Taggart, old stump-jumping custodian of Town and Country. We have cleared the cartridge rack, so the instrumentals get the road. Red Tide Run.
- RecordRed Tide Run — The Harbor Kings
- DJ
Red Tide Run, short and fast. Denny Cole on the AFVN circuit. One more detour before the final surf side: The Visitor, instrumental.

- RecordSurfin the delta Part 1 — The Delta Reverbs
Part one, and the surf set is complete in reverse. Milo Taggart thanking you for riding with Town and Country. Keep the receiver close and the coffee closer. Charlie Mercer at Radio Lai Khê, thirteen-thirty on your dial. KLIK: Happy Radio for the Big Red One! Thanks for keeping us company. Army Specialist Denny Cole closing the command-information stack from AFVN Saigon. The Dawn Buster, Radio Lai Khê, and Town and Country are all here on the American Forces Vietnam Network. Keep it five by five.
