Running order

The script and running order as produced for the game. Pick a time to jump there while it plays.

  1. RecordMatchbook Heart instrumental — Nora Vale and the Paper Matches
  2. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Good morning, Lai Khe. Coffee found? Boots located? Fine start. Radio Lai Khe—Happy Radio for the Big Red One! This is KLIK, thirteen-thirty on your dial. Zero nine twenty hours, Tuesday, the first of August. Charlie Mercer here in the plywood palace. Give me a moment to wake up the turntable.

  3. Station ID

Radio Lai Khe! Happy Radio for the Big Red One!

  4. RecordSurfin the delta Part 1 — The Delta Reverbs

All right. First record of the morning. The Delta Reverbs... Surfin' the Delta, Part One.

  5. DJ · Charlie Mercer

The Delta Reverbs... Surfin' the Delta, Part One. That woke the turntable up. It is now requesting coffee.

  6. DJ · Charlie Mercer

All right, big spender. If R and R is on your short-range calendar, Division Finance has a reminder about advance pay.

  7. Service spot

Are you returning to the land of the girl watchers soon? Lucky man. But girl watching can become more involved than a spectator sport. When you go out for that expensive stateside night, you do not want to end it doing K.P. for civilians. Be prepared. Think ahead. Now, the serious part. Before departing Vietnam, arrange with the Division Finance Office for the money you may need. Remember: advance pay reduces your monthly pay for six months... or until the entire advance is refunded.

  8. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Girl watching, advance pay, and six months of consequences. That joke got serious in a hurry. Think ahead, troops.

  9. RecordBlood Brothers — The Redline Sons

Now... from my private stack, something with its boots already on. The Redline Sons. Blood Brothers.

  10. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Blood Brothers, the Redline Sons. That record did not enter the room... it kicked in the door.

  11. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Before Ruby gets anywhere near that telephone, the Iron Brigade clubs have a word about their Big Red One watch.

  12. Service spot

Happy Radio, thirteen-thirty. The Third Brigade E.M. and N.C.O. Clubs now have a special Big Red One wristwatch for members of the Iron Brigade. It has seventeen jewels. It is waterproof and antimagnetic, and carries the Big Red One insignia on the face. The price is seventeen dollars and fifty cents. This club purchase does not require a ration-card authorization. If you need a watch... there you go.

  13. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Seventeen jewels for seventeen-fifty? If it also keeps red dust out of my socks, put me down for two.

  14. RecordRuby (don’t answer the telephone) — The Switchboard Saints

Okay, Ruby... the phone is ringing. The Switchboard Saints. Ruby, Don't Answer the Telephone.

  15. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Wow... that's right, Ruby. Don't you love a record that gives advice after the damage is done? The Switchboard Saints.

  16. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Take a breath, Lai Khe. Danny Clay has tonight's word from Club Thirteen-Thirty.

  17. Promo

This is Danny Clay. Join me Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday nights... from nineteen-oh-five through twenty-one hundred... for Club Thirteen-Thirty. Two hours of modern American music, with you in mind, right here on KLIK.

  18. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Two hours of music and no formation? Danny, you have yourself a crowd.

  19. RecordRed Dust Saturday Night — Rafe Hollis and the Redclay Riders

Zero nine thirty hours. Let's put a little red clay on the needle. Rafe Hollis and the Redclay Riders... Red Dust Saturday Night.

  20. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Red Dust Saturday Night. Boots are red, road is red, coffee may be red. Nature is showing off again.

  21. Station ID

Radio Lai Khe! Happy Radio for the Big Red One!

  22. RecordSurfin the delta Part 2 — The Delta Reverbs

Needle back down... gently, corporal. The Delta Reverbs. Surfin' the Delta, Part Two!

  23. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Part Two from the Delta Reverbs. The turntable says it is fit for duty. I am still waiting on the paperwork.

  24. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Tiny enemy, enormous paperwork. Before the next record, here is Division's malaria reminder. Yes, you know the one.

  25. Service spot

The mosquito is probably the smallest foe you will encounter in Vietnam. He spreads malaria and encephalitis. These diseases can be dangerous if they are not treated early. Do not wait until you get sick to protect yourself. Take your anti-malaria pill weekly. Spray repellent on exposed skin. Sleep under your mosquito net. Spray enclosed areas with an aerosol bomb. Do not become a casualty of a pesky mosquito.

  26. DJ · Charlie Mercer

The mosquito does not care about your rank, your weekend, or your excellent personality. Take the pill. Use the net.

  27. RecordNeon Over Saigon — The Electric Canopy

All right... a little color for a very green country. The Electric Canopy, with Neon Over Saigon.

  28. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Neon Over Saigon. Charlie Mercer, five by five from the rubber trees, where the sky is rehearsing its monsoon impression.

  29. Station ID

This is KLIK, thirteen-thirty on your dial, broadcasting from Lai Khe, Vietnam. Radio Lai Khe: Happy Radio for the Big Red One!

  30. RecordColdwater Line — Jesse Cade and the Highballers

Cold water next—a thing known locally through song titles, old photographs, and unreliable witnesses. Jesse Cade and the Highballers... Coldwater Line.

  31. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Coldwater Line, rolling away behind us. Nice record. Made the humidity angry.

  32. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Hold that next record. If you are thinking beyond this tour, the Army career counselor has some information.

  33. Service spot

For the man who is going places, a second term in today's Army offers specialized training for the job you want... assignments worldwide... and the chance to move ahead as a specialist or leader. You make choices in education, job, or place of duty. See your brigade career counselor for complete information.

  34. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Training, duty station, another stripe... big decisions. Talk to the counselor before the counselor finds you in the chow line.

  35. RecordThree More Mile — The Milepost Three

Now, the road is long and home is the longest three miles in Southeast Asia. The Milepost Three... Three More Miles.

  36. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Three More Miles. That one had dust on the tires and home in the rear-view mirror.

  37. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Quiet for a moment. Division has a reminder about what stays out of letters, and what stays off the air.

  38. Service spot

Command information. A letter home is not a situation report. Do not write troop movements... operation dates... flight schedules... radio frequencies... unit strength... or defensive positions. The enemy only needs one loose detail to complete a picture. Keep friendly information in friendly hands. Think before you talk. Think before you write.

  39. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Loose details make a complete picture. Keep the family letter friendly... and keep the operation out of it.

  40. RecordSurfin the delta Part 3 — The Delta Reverbs

Okay, turntable... show me your travel orders. The Delta Reverbs. Surfin' the Delta, Part Three!

  41. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Part Three, and the turntable still refuses to salute. I admire its consistency.

  42. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Now, a public-service message for any hands that cannot mind their own business. Snakes. Do not volunteer your fingers for reconnaissance.

  43. Service spot

Snakes creep. Usually, they do not bother you... unless you do some creeping yourself. To get bitten, all you have to do is sneak up and try to grab one. The snake is sometimes faster than the hand. If bitten, kill the snake if possible, and bring it to the nearest medic or doctor. It can help determine the serum. Best advice? Do not get bitten in the first place.

  44. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Simple field test. If the stick moves by itself, let the stick keep the position.

  45. RecordNobody’s Keeping Scores — Caleb North and the Even Breaks

Back to the private collection. Caleb North and the Even Breaks... Nobody's Keeping Scores.

  46. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Nobody's Keeping Scores. Somebody was... but he lost the pencil. Charlie Mercer on Happy Radio.

  47. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Before the next side, a field reminder about clean water, dry socks, and staying out of the aid station. Here is Division.

  48. Service spot

Field reminder. Drink only water from an approved source. When ordered, use purification tablets exactly as directed. Keep canteens and mess gear clean. Change wet socks. Dry your feet whenever the mission allows. Report sores before they become a casualty. Clean water and dry feet are not luxuries in the field.

  49. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Clean canteen, dry feet. Not glamorous... but neither is explaining jungle rot to the medic.

  50. RecordFriday Wears Red — June Hollow and the Red Letters

Yes, it is Tuesday. No, this record has not been informed. June Hollow and the Red Letters... Friday Wears Red.

  51. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Friday Wears Red. Tuesday is filing a complaint, but nobody here is taking the call.

  52. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Country hands, ears up. Jim Rowan has the schedule for the Country Corner.

  53. Promo

This is Jim Rowan. If you have nothing better to do from thirteen-oh-five through fifteen hundred, join me in the Country Corner. We play country and western music for you, Monday through Saturday... right here on KLIK.

  54. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Thirteen-oh-five through fifteen hundred. Plenty of time for a steel guitar to improve your attitude.

  55. RecordMatchbook Heart — Nora Vale and the Paper Matches

Bring the flame down low now. Easy on the Zippo, soldier... the song already has one. Nora Vale and the Paper Matches. Matchbook Heart.

  56. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Matchbook Heart. That one burns slowly. Let it sit there a second.

  57. RecordSurfin the delta Part 4 — The Delta Reverbs

The patrol heads back to the river now. The Delta Reverbs... Surfin' the Delta, Part Four!

  58. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Part Four from the Delta Reverbs. Four trips around the dial and not one request for travel pay.

  59. DJ · Charlie Mercer

All right, troops. Division has a word about military payment certificates, issue gear, and the black market.

  60. Service spot

Military payment certificates and government equipment are not trading stock. Selling rations, fuel, weapons, ammunition, uniforms, or scrip to unauthorized buyers helps the black market... and can help the enemy. Keep issue gear with your unit. Spend military currency only where authorized. If a deal looks too easy, walk away... and report it through your chain of command.

  61. DJ · Charlie Mercer

If the deal looks too easy, it probably comes with paperwork you do not want. Keep the gear with the unit.

  62. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Got a dedication, a request, or somebody back home listening in your head? Barbara Lane has the request-show schedule.

  63. Promo

Hi, I'm Barbara Lane. Join me Sundays and Wednesdays... from nineteen-oh-five through twenty-one hundred... for the Clara Barton Show. We'll take requests and dedications by phone. So join us, won't you?

  64. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Sundays and Wednesdays. Keep the request clean, keep the dedication short... and give the phone line a fighting chance.

  65. Station ID

  68. Station ID

Serving the men of the First Infantry Division's Iron Brigade, this is KLIK, thirteen-thirty on your dial, broadcasting from Lai Khe, South Vietnam. The time is ten hundred hours. Stay tuned for AFVN news.

  69. News

This is AFVN News on the hour. Good morning. This is Army Specialist Martin Cole, with these reports from major American networks, wire services and military sources. It is Tuesday, the first of August, nineteen sixty-seven. The aircraft carrier Forrestal moored at the United States naval base at Subic Bay Monday evening after Saturday's flight-deck fire and explosions off Vietnam. The latest report lists one hundred twenty-nine men dead, seven unaccounted for and sixty-four injured. Those figures are provisional. Fifty-two bodies were brought ashore after the carrier docked. Small fires from smoldering material sounded additional alarms during the approach and after the ship reached the pier, but the ship's crews put them out. Rear Admiral Harvey Lanham said the disaster began after a fuel tank on an A-4 Skyhawk was punctured and caught fire. The cause of the puncture had not been established when that statement was made. Flames reached armed aircraft prepared for a strike, setting off bombs, rockets and ammunition. The fire and explosions damaged the after portion of the flight deck and compartments below. An official investigation is under way. Forrestal's scheduled combat operations have been suspended. In the northern provinces of South Vietnam, Marine units have completed two recent operations. Operation Bear Chain, also called Fremont, ended Wednesday after Marines and South Vietnamese troops worked against enemy forces in the coastal portion of the First Corps area. A large rice cache was reported seized near Don Que. Operation Beacon Guide, an amphibious and helicopter-borne sweep begun July twenty-first, ended Sunday after light contact. Military spokesmen caution that operational reports and casualty figures remain subject to confirmation. In Washington, President Johnson has named attorney David Ginsburg executive director of the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders. The President established the commission Saturday and directed it to examine what happened in Detroit and other American cities, why it happened and what measures may prevent further violence. Illinois Governor Otto Kerner is chairman, and New York Mayor John Lindsay is vice chairman. Federal troops were authorized for Detroit on July twenty-four after a request from Michigan Governor George Romney. The President said approximately five thousand federal troops were moved by air to Selfridge Air Force Base and later deployed into the city. The White House says the new commission will make interim recommendations when ready and a final report within one year. Detroit was reported comparatively quiet Monday. At his Monday news conference, President Johnson was asked about a Gallup poll reporting that fifty-two percent of those questioned did not agree with his handling of Vietnam policy. The President said he did not know whether the poll accurately reflected public opinion. Asked whether the opposition would change United States policy, he said the administration does not base its actions on the poll. In Canada, the official visit of French President Charles de Gaulle ended last week after a dispute over his remarks in Montreal. On July twenty-four, the French President used the slogan of Quebec separatists while addressing a crowd from the balcony of Montreal City Hall. The Canadian government rejected the suggestion that its citizens required liberation. General de Gaulle departed Quebec on July twenty-six without making the scheduled visit to Ottawa. The outlook for Saigon and much of the Third Corps area calls for variable cloudiness with scattered monsoon showers and isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures will remain in the middle to upper eighties, with high humidity and light winds except near storms. Visibility may fall sharply in heavy rain. Field units will use their local weather observations and current movement instructions. That is the news. This is the American Forces Vietnam Network.

  71. RecordBreakwater Run — The Breakwater Runners

And we are back. News has the pencils; I have the records. From the private collection... the Breakwater Runners. Breakwater Run!

  72. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Breakwater Run. Wind it up, keep it five by five, and let it ride. That one did exactly that.

  73. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Feel that air? The weather desk has noticed it too. Here is the Third Corps forecast.

  74. News

Third Corps weather. Variable cloudiness, with scattered monsoon showers and isolated thunderstorms. Temperatures in the middle to upper eighties, with high humidity and light winds... except near storms. Visibility may fall sharply in heavy rain. Field units will use local observations and current movement instructions.

  75. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Clouds, rain, humidity... the whole orchestra. Keep one eye on the sky and both boots out of the deepest puddle.

  76. RecordSurfin the delta Part 5 — The Delta Reverbs

Fifth patrol around the turntable. Nobody stepped on the cable, so morale is excellent. The Delta Reverbs... Surfin' the Delta, Part Five.

  77. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Part Five. The Delta Reverbs are still moving, and the needle is still reporting for duty.

  78. RecordThe Visitor (take 8) — The Unmeasured Hours

Now... from my private album collection, something special. Somebody is knocking from a very long way off. The Unmeasured Hours... The Visitor.

  79. DJ · Charlie Mercer

The Visitor, from the Unmeasured Hours. That record had luggage. Give it a second before we turn the lights back up.

  80. DJ · Charlie Mercer

If West Point is somewhere on your horizon, this Division announcement is for you. Listen for the qualifications.

  81. Service spot

The Army needs qualified enlisted men to fill roles as cadets at West Point. If you are a United States citizen, unmarried, between seventeen and twenty-two years of age, and have completed a college-preparatory secondary school... you may qualify. For entrance examinations and other requirements, contact your local Big Red One reenlistment office.

  82. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Big road, West Point. If you qualify, ask the reenlistment office before you talk yourself out of it.

  83. RecordFireflies — Mara Quinn and the Night Jars

Small lights now, no generator required. Mara Quinn and the Night Jars... Fireflies.

  84. DJ · Charlie Mercer

Fireflies. Tiny lights in a very big night. Maintenance section reports no batteries required.

  85. DJ · Charlie Mercer

One quick pill-call reminder before we move on. The message is brief... but the mosquito is patient.

  86. Service spot

Pill call! Take the anti-malaria pill on schedule. Use repellent. Sleep under your net. The mosquito does not care how short you are.

  87. DJ · Charlie Mercer

The mosquito does not care how short you are. That line is better every time. Take the pill.
