Running order

  1. DJ · Denny Cole

Good morning, Vietnam! This is the American Forces Vietnam Network in Saigon. It is six-oh-five on Friday morning, the twenty-ninth of September, nineteen sixty-seven. Army Specialist Denny Cole has the Dawn Buster, one microphone, two obedient turntables, and coffee declared combat effective. News is not standing by. The transcript has vanished, and the tape has apparently gone T.D.Y. So we will defend the morning with records. All right, Saigon. Up and at 'em. Let's wake this place up!

  2. Station ID

This is AFVN, the American Forces Vietnam Network in Saigon, serving the American fighting man with information and entertainment. The voice of home.

  3. DJ · Denny Cole

First one out of the rack, a strange little light in the trees. Lanterns in the Tree Line.

  4. RecordLanterns in the Tree Line — The Amber Signals
  5. DJ · Denny Cole

Lanterns in the Tree Line. Keep your eyes open and your imagination on a short leash. Denny Cole on the Dawn Buster. Before the next one, a little barracks arithmetic from the prevention-of-theft department.

  6. Service spot

Hey, man, may I borrow your raincoat? Somebody took mine. They got my poncho too. How come you are always losing things? Do you ever lock them up? Well, sure. Most of the time. I have only lost two hundred thirty-seven dollars and sixty-nine cents worth this year. Make it two hundred thirty-nine. I am keeping this lighter. Get a lock for your locker, and use it.

  7. DJ · Denny Cole

There it is: one lock costs less than replacing your whole life. Also, if a fellow asks to borrow your raincoat, your poncho, and your lighter in the same minute, you may be speaking with the thief. From my private stack, here come the Brass Lanterns with five minutes of glorious trouble. MacArthur Pie.

  8. RecordMacArthur Pie — The Brass Lanterns
  9. DJ · Denny Cole

The Brass Lanterns and MacArthur Pie. That was not a song so much as a full field kitchen falling down a staircase in perfect rhythm. Fifteen minutes after six. I have located the news envelope. It contains a coffee ring, half a weather map, and a note reading, quote, good luck. No transcript. No tape. We press on.

  10. DJ · Denny Cole

Something cooler now, at least in the title. Jesse Cade and the Highballers, riding the Coldwater Line.

  11. RecordColdwater Line — Jesse Cade and the Highballers
  12. DJ · Denny Cole

Coldwater Line, Jesse Cade and the Highballers. It lowered the temperature in this studio almost half a degree. Stand by. The request telephone is ringing, which means either we have a listener or somebody wants the tricycle back.

  13. DJ · Denny Cole

Dawn Buster? This is Private First Class Eddie Marsh over at the Tan Son Nhut motor pool. Can you play something for the night crew? We have been awake so long the jeeps are starting to look judgmental. Eddie, I know that look. What do you want to hear? The B-side of The Visitor. The Boy at the Edge of Noon. And tell Corporal Harris his jeep will be ready when it stops making that noise.

  14. DJ · Denny Cole

Request granted. Corporal Harris, your jeep has issued a statement and denies everything. For Eddie and the night crew, here is that B-side: The Boy at the Edge of Noon.

  15. RecordThe Boy at the Edge of Noon — The Unmeasured Hours
  16. DJ · Denny Cole

The Boy at the Edge of Noon. Long record. Worth the walk. Right now, a short word about doing something intelligent with your pay. Yes, it has happened before.

  17. Service spot

Let your tour in Vietnam count for something. The Uniformed Services Savings Deposit Program pays ten percent interest on authorized deposits. You may arrange a regular amount from your pay and go home with money in the bank. For eligibility, limits, and deposit instructions, see your unit finance office.

  18. DJ · Denny Cole

Ten percent. The coffee in this building returns nothing and still gets a regular allotment. Denny Cole, six twenty-five, AFVN Saigon. The Electric Canopy is switching on Neon Over Saigon.

  19. RecordNeon Over Saigon — The Electric Canopy
  20. DJ · Denny Cole

Neon Over Saigon, the Electric Canopy. Nice glow, no generator requisition required. It is six twenty-eight, the city is moving, and somewhere a clerk has stamped the sunrise in triplicate. Rafe Hollis and the Redclay Riders are next with Red Dust Saturday Night.

  21. RecordRed Dust Saturday Night — Rafe Hollis and the Redclay Riders
  22. DJ · Denny Cole

Red Dust Saturday Night. Rafe Hollis and the Redclay Riders. Boots are red, road is red, and the laundry man has stopped taking questions. If you have R and R coming, listen to this before you start packing the loud shirt.

  23. Service spot

R and R can be seven fine, lazy days. But without an up-to-date shot record, your trip can be stopped before it starts. You may not be allowed on the aircraft. Check your record before departure day. Get required inoculations in time. Be prepared for your R and R.

  24. DJ · Denny Cole

There you are. Shirt, money, orders, shot record. Forget one and Bangkok becomes a seven-day tour of the passenger terminal. Back to the private stack: the Redline Sons, and Blood Brothers.

  25. RecordBlood Brothers — The Redline Sons
  26. DJ · Denny Cole

Blood Brothers, the Redline Sons. Subtle as a deuce-and-a-half in a library. This is AFVN, the American Forces Vietnam Network in Saigon, the voice of home. Ruby, do not answer that telephone. Everybody else, turn this one up.

  27. RecordRuby (don’t answer the telephone) — The Switchboard Saints
  28. DJ · Denny Cole

Ruby, Don't Answer the Telephone. Excellent advice, especially if the motor pool is calling. I am going to try the newsroom and find out what happened to our missing copy. Keep your expectations at parade rest.

  29. DJ · Denny Cole

Newsroom. No, I do not have your transcript. I have yesterday's baseball scores, a weather map for Guam, and a reel marked Do Not Erase that somebody erased. What about the seven o'clock news tape? It signed out a jeep at zero five forty and has not been seen since. We believe it is travelling with your transcript.

  30. DJ · Denny Cole

Outstanding. Two fugitives, one jeep, and not a headline between them. If you see a quarter-inch tape wearing sunglasses, notify this station. Until then, music remains the most reliable department in the building. Two Cups on the Table.

  31. RecordTwo Cups on the Table — The Blue Room Assembly
  32. DJ · Denny Cole

Two Cups on the Table. A domestic argument with coffee service and a happy ending. Now, Caleb North and the Even Breaks: Nobody's Keeping Scores.

  33. RecordNobody’s Keeping Scores — Caleb North and the Even Breaks
  34. DJ · Denny Cole

Nobody's Keeping Scores, Caleb North and the Even Breaks. Somebody was keeping score, but he left the pencil in the missing jeep. It is fifteen minutes before seven. This next message does not ask how you vote. It asks whether you are going to bother.

  35. Service spot

You are old enough to vote. So what are you going to do about it? Sit on your duff until after the election, and then complain about how everyone else voted? The Armed Forces has made an all-out effort to help you vote: announcements, printed instructions, commander's calls, and voting officers. Do not wait until election day and say nobody told you. Your voting officer is only a few minutes away. See him. Find out how to register and request your ballot. Then use it. Either take part, or stop complaining about the men who do.

  36. DJ · Denny Cole

Direct, to the point, and unlikely to fit on a greeting card. See your voting officer. Now, something strange from the private stack. This is The Visitor.

  37. RecordThe Visitor (take 9) — The Unmeasured Hours
  38. DJ · Denny Cole

The Visitor. That one came a long way to use the telephone. All right. The calendar says Friday, and for once this next title agrees. June Hollow and the Red Letters: Friday Wears Red.

  39. RecordFriday Wears Red — June Hollow and the Red Letters
  40. DJ · Denny Cole

Friday Wears Red. June Hollow and the Red Letters. Seven minutes before seven, and the missing news tape has now missed two formations. Before another record, here is a useful reminder for every man already counting the days until civilian clothes.

  41. Service spot

Your military service can benefit you long after you leave active duty. The G.I. Bill may provide education and training assistance, and eligible veterans may qualify for a guaranteed home loan. Benefits depend on your service and your plans. Check now with your education adviser or Veterans Administration representative.

  42. DJ · Denny Cole

Good advice. A plan for home weighs less than a duffel bag and travels better. The Milepost Three have a road song for anybody watching the short-time calendar: Three More Miles.

  43. RecordThree More Mile — The Milepost Three
  44. DJ · Denny Cole

Three More Miles, the Milepost Three. The last mile is always three miles long; Army surveying has confirmed it. Bring the room down a little now. Nora Vale and the Paper Matches, with Matchbook Heart.

  45. RecordMatchbook Heart — Nora Vale and the Paper Matches
  46. DJ · Denny Cole

Nora Vale and the Paper Matches. Matchbook Heart. That one burns slowly, so leave it alone for a breath. Before our last record, the smallest enemy in the neighborhood gets his own command announcement. Mosquitoes have excellent attendance and terrible intentions.

  47. Service spot

The mosquito is probably the smallest foe you will encounter in Vietnam. He spreads malaria and encephalitis. These diseases can be dangerous if they are not treated early. Do not wait until you get sick to protect yourself. Take your anti-malaria pill weekly. Spray repellent on exposed skin. Sleep under your mosquito net. Spray enclosed areas with an aerosol bomb. Do not become a casualty of a pesky mosquito.

  48. DJ · Denny Cole

Take the pill, use the repellent, sleep under the net. The mosquito does not care how many days you have left. Last record of the hour now. Mara Quinn and the Night Jars are turning off the big lights and leaving us Fireflies.

  49. RecordFireflies — Mara Quinn and the Night Jars
  50. DJ · Denny Cole

Mara Quinn and the Night Jars with Fireflies. It is coming up on seven-oh-five in Saigon. The news transcript remains absent without leave; the tape has been promoted to mystery; and the jeep has declined comment. Denny Cole closing the Dawn Buster. Thanks to the motor pool, the night crew, and every man who kept one ear on the radio. This is the American Forces Vietnam Network, the voice of home. Keep it five by five, take care of the man beside you, and have yourself a good morning, Vietnam.
